Many people assume that sedation dentistry is simply a means for battling dental-related anxiety; but did you know that the practice has many other useful applications? Helping patients conquer their fear of the dentist is certainly its biggest draw, but there are other benefits of sedation dentistry that are lesser-known and often overlooked. Keep reading to learn more.

Breaking Down Sedation Dentistry

To put it into layman’s terms, sedation dentistry is the practice of using medication to help patients relax during various dental procedures. It’s most commonly used to assist patients who suffer from anxiety and nervousness about the dentist. However, sedation dentistry can be used on any patient that so desires, assuming they qualify. Your dentist will need to holistically evaluate your health prior to recommending sedation.

There are many different methods used in sedation dentistry, and all are very effective. Nitrous oxide, more commonly known as laughing gas, is known for instilling feelings of warmth and euphoria in the patient. IV sedation can also be used, especially when there’s a lot of work to be done. In some cases, oral conscious sedation is used—a pill is prescribed and taken prior to the appointment, and by the time you sit down in the chair you will be totally relaxed and ready for treatment.

It’s important to note that no matter what method is used, your dentist will emphasize your comfort and well-being; they want you to see as relaxed as possible for your treatment!

Benefits of Sedation Dentistry (other than battling dental-related anxiety)

There are tons of benefits to sedation dentistry, but so many are overshadowed by its ability to help anxious patients.

  • Less time is typically needed for procedures, as the patient is more compliant.
  • Allows for multiple procedures to be completed in one appointment if needed.
  • Helpful for patients who struggle to remain sitting in the dental chair.
  • Helpful for patients with TMJ problems and those who have difficulty keeping their mouths open.
  • Helpful for those with a sensitive gag reflex.
  • Allows patients with special needs to receive treatment.
  • Typically considered safer and gentler than general anesthesia.

Additionally, the appointment will seemingly go by in a flash for the patient! A lot of these benefits can lend aid to those who struggle with anxiety, but the sheer amount of accessibility that sedation dentistry offers patients is enough to make anyone consider it.

When considering sedation dentistry, it’s important to make note of all the potential benefits it can offer; not just those that target dental-related anxiety. You could be the bravest person in the world, but sedation dentistry could still perfectly fit your needs!
