Sedation Dentistry Q & A

What is sedation dentistry?

Sedation dentistry allows you to undergo complex dental procedures without fear or anxiety. Dr. Sue offers several types of sedation to suit your specific needs and ensure you have a comfortable, relaxed dental experience.

What types of sedation are available?

At Glendale Dental Wellness, Dr. Sue offers three types of sedation services depending on your needs:

Mild sedation

The lightest form of sedation, mild sedation is helpful if you suffer from mild anxiety or have to undergo a complex or lengthy dental procedure.

Oral medications make you sleepy but allow you to remain awake and breathe on your own. You feel completely relaxed throughout your treatment, free of anxiety.

Besides oral medications, Dr. Sue can induce mild sedation using nitrous oxide inhalation, also known as laughing gas.

Moderate sedation

This type of sedation is suitable if you have moderate dental anxieties or have to undergo a complex procedure. Moderate sedation uses intravenous sedation that allows you to remain awake throughout the procedure but leaves you feeling relaxed.

Deep sedation

Deep sedation is so named because it provides a deep relaxation where you go between consciousness and unconsciousness throughout your procedure. You won’t remember what happened during treatment or be able to respond to questions while under sedation.

If Dr. Sue recommends oral medications for sedation, you generally take the prescription medication before coming to the office. By the time you’re ready for treatment, you’re fully relaxed.

What can I expect following sedation?

It takes several hours for you to recover from both moderate and deep sedation. For your safety, you need to have a friend or family member be with you throughout the procedure and drive you home from your appointment. You should get plenty of rest after your procedure to give the sedation time to wear off before returning to your normal activities.

Light sedation wears off more quickly, and Dr. Sue tells you if you need to have someone with you for your appointment before your procedure.

What are the benefits of sedation dentistry?

Sedation dentistry offers you the opportunity to get the important dental services you need if fear would otherwise keep you away from the dentist office.

Benefits of sedation include:

  • No pain during treatment
  • No memory of the procedure
  • No sense of smell or sound
  • No fear or anxiety in the dentist chair
