Preserve, don’t extract! Painless root canal therapy as an alternative to dental extractions
Glendale Dental Wellness works closely with patients across Southern California to keep their teeth healthy. However, should decay or other trauma arise, we have the advanced training and capabilities to preserve even severely damaged teeth.
Our talented dentist, Dr. Ivan Chan, preserves teeth that might otherwise be extracted or lost with root canal therapy. Contrary to what you may have heard about this procedure, modern root canal treatment is well tolerated, precise, fast, and has a high rate of lasting success. It is also an affordable alternative to removing and replacing the tooth with prosthetics such as bridges, dentures, and implants.
Root canal basics
This standard restorative dentistry procedure involves removing infected pulp tissue and nerves. Each unaltered tooth contains pulp tissue. These tissues extend from the white part of the tooth (the crown) to its root tips. The pulp nourishes a maturing tooth; however, after it has fully grown and developed, this tooth no longer needs this innermost tissue. It can continue to function without the pulp. Once the infected pulp and nerves are removed, the tooth can be restored to health. The infection clears, and the tooth can no longer experience the sensation of pain.
The process
For utmost comfort, a localized anesthetic is administered. We can also discuss options such as nitrous oxide or oral conscious sedation to put anxious patients at ease. Dr. Chan then accesses the inside of the tooth. You won’t feel anything due to the numbing anesthetic! After the infected root canals are sterilized and reshaped, they are sealed off to encourage healing and protect the treatment site. It is essential to promptly restore the tooth with a dental crown. The crown ensures the long-term strength of the weakened tooth. Without it, root canal treatment may not be successful. Ultimately, the tooth may be lost.
